Burjeel Holdings launches BEACON to integrate emergency and acute care across its network

On August 11, 2026, Burjeel Holdings inaugurated BEACON, an integrated framework designed to streamline emergency and acute care across its network of hospitals in Abu Dhabi. Simultaneous launches at Burjeel Hospital Abu Dhabi and Burjeel Medical City marked the introduction of this unified model, connecting emergency, critical care, and interfacility transfers into a cohesive system.

BEACON aims to ensure that patients entering the Burjeel network receive rapid access to the appropriate level of care, from initial emergency assessment to specialist intervention and recovery. The integrated framework consolidates various elements of the patient journey through shared clinical pathways and coordinated decision-making, fostering better communication and collaboration among medical teams.

Key components of BEACON include acute care access, Emergency Department quality and value, integration between the Emergency Department and the wider hospital, and interfacility transfer and prehospital integration. The framework emphasizes the importance of standardized clinical protocols, technology-enabled clinical decision support, and subspecialty routing. By centralizing clinical pathways and decision-making, BEACON strives to minimize delays and ensure seamless care transitions.

Dr. Shamsheer Vayalil, Chairman and CEO of Burjeel Holdings, emphasized the network-wide approach, stating, "When a patient faces an emergency, the strength of our entire healthcare network should be available to them." Dr. Malcolm Borg, Consultant and Group Head of Emergency Medicine, added, "Emergency care does not begin or end at the doors of the Emergency Department.

A patient may need prehospital support, rapid diagnostics, specialist intervention, critical care, or transfer to another facility, often within a very short period of time. BEACON gives our teams a common framework to coordinate these decisions and act as one clinical network."

BEACON supports a wide range of emergency conditions, including cardiac emergencies, stroke, sepsis, trauma, pediatrics, and acute oncology. The model also enables access to highly specialized and quaternary care across the Burjeel network. Technology support will enhance visibility of clinical capacity and specialist availability, aiding informed decision-making regarding patient care placement.

The launch of BEACON at Burjeel Hospital Abu Dhabi and Burjeel Medical City was attended by key figures from Burjeel Holdings, including Dr. Shamsheer Vayalil, Dr. Malcolm Borg, and Mr. Omran Al Khoori. As the framework progressively expands across Burjeel's acute care network, it promises to elevate the standard of emergency and acute care delivery in Abu Dhabi.
