Britain's Andy Green sets another speed record, this time for fastest run in a hydrogen-powered car

Wendover, Utah — In an effort to showcase hydrogen power, British driver Andy Green set another world record on Tuesday at Utah's renowned Bonneville Salt Flats. The 64-year-old retired Royal Air Force pilot reached a speed of 406.320 mph in a hydrogen-powered car with two internal combustion engines, generating a combined 1,600 horsepower.

The Fédération Internationale de l’Automobile confirmed that this marked the highest speed achieved by a vehicle in its category. Green, who earlier in his career broke the sound barrier, drove the 32-foot vehicle, constructed by British construction equipment manufacturer JCB, across the crystalline surface of the Bonneville Salt Flats.

Despite the record-breaking run, Green noted that it didn't come close to the overall land-speed record, which he set in 1997 using jet power. While Tuesday's achievement did not surpass the land-speed record, it marked a significant milestone for hydrogen as "the fuel of the future."
