Bodies Of 3 Nepalese Climbers Killed In Broad Peak Avalanche Arrive In Kathmandu

Kathmandu, August 11 - The bodies of three Nepalese climbers who perished in an avalanche on Broad Peak last month arrived in Nepal on Tuesday, according to officials. The coffins containing the remains of Kili Pemba Sherpa, Gyalu Sherpa, and Nima Sherpa touched down at the Tribhuvan International Airport, marking the culmination of a harrowing recovery effort.

The foreign ministry had announced prior to the arrival that the bodies would be handed over to their families on arrival. The tragedy claimed the lives of six Nepalese climbers, one each from Pakistan, Oman, the United States, and China, in the avalanche that struck on July 30. Veteran British-Nepali mountaineer Nirmal Purja, who was among the victims, had his body flown back to the UK earlier in the week.

The first families to see their loved ones were overcome with grief as they broke down in tears or stood motionless in silent tribute. Their remains are now being kept at the Nepal Mountaineering Association's headquarters in Naxal, Kathmandu, for public viewing. The recovery operations are complicated by the extreme altitude, treacherous terrain, and unpredictable weather conditions typical of Broad Peak, making such rescues incredibly dangerous.
