Blinkit warehouse licence suspended in Mumbai over expired food, cockroach infestation

The Maharashtra Food and Drug Administration has taken action against Blink Commerce, the parent company of Blinkit, by suspending their food license. This comes after an inspection of Blinkit's warehouse in Malad West, Mumbai, revealed numerous hygiene and safety violations. The warehouse, located at Sarvodaya Bhuvan on Ramchandra Lane, was found to have serious issues such as expired and tampered products, improper storage, and a significant cockroach infestation.

Food safety officials also noted that food items were stored on rusted racks or directly on the floor, further exacerbating the unsanitary conditions. This suspension marks the second time in recent weeks that a Blinkit warehouse has faced license suspension. The Maharashtra FDA has been increasing its scrutiny of food establishments due to multiple reports of unhygienic conditions and food safety violations at various warehouses and food businesses.

Food handlers are required to wear appropriate protective gear and maintain proper storage and pest control measures. Officials highlighted the warehouse's lack of adequate pest control, poor waste management, and the improper storage of expired and damaged food items among fresh stock in cold rooms. The FDA mandates regular inspections to ensure compliance with food safety regulations, and violations can result in immediate license suspension.
