Beijing Sports Games opens at National Indoor Stadium

Beijing hosted the 17th Beijing Sports Games opening ceremony on August 8, 2026, coinciding with the city's 18th National Fitness Day. The event took place at the National Indoor Stadium, where numerous champion athletes cheered on the festivities. The 17th edition of the Games featured a mix of traditional and emerging sports, from athletics and swimming to newer disciplines like pickleball and breakdancing.

Around 35,000 participants, including teenagers, college students, and the general public, are expected to engage in the month-long event, which concludes in October.

Beijing has been steadily incorporating sports into its urban landscape. With 3.27 square meters of sports venues per capita and 53.1% of the population regularly engaging in physical activity, the city embraces sports as a lifestyle. Young football fan Yin Shen expressed appreciation for the mass participation events, stating, "It's great to see so many sports that ordinary people usually play."

The ceremony saw 14 champion athletes from Beijing, including Ma Long, Zhang Yining, and Ding Ning, who vowed to inspire more people to pursue sports. Zhang Yining particularly expressed gratitude, saying, "I am especially grateful to Beijing, where I realized my dreams." She further emphasized that Beijing is a city where dreams can come true.
