'Beautiful to play with' - tributes flow for former Silver Fern captain Ana Noovao

Former Silver Fern captain Ana Noovao has passed away at the age of 58, leaving behind a legacy marked by her strength of conviction and the warmth she brought to the netball community. Noovao, who played as a midcourter for New Zealand from 1989 to 1992, earned 23 test caps before representing the Cook Islands in two seasons post-retirement. She was named the 15th captain of the Silver Ferns in 1992, following the retirement of Waimarama Taumaunu.

Leoni Leaver, a fellow netballer, recalled their time together at College Rifles in the Bendon League. She praised Noovao's natural leadership qualities, noting that she could always trust Ana on the court. Leaver also highlighted Noovao's feisty playing style and the safety she provided to teammates. She said, "She was a real feisty wing attack and beautiful to play with and you always felt safe in the team with Ana."

Her coaching sessions for generations of South Auckland schoolgirls left a lasting impression. After moving to Queensland, she continued to nurture the game in her new environment. Leaver remembered Noovao's faith, noting that she refrained from playing on Sundays, a testament to her strong convictions.

Fellow player Joan Hodson, who also played with Noovao at Auckland, described her as a gifted wing attack with a quiet leadership style. She emphasized Noovao's religious beliefs, which were an integral part of her leadership. Teresa Tairi, another former teammate, spoke about Noovao's determination and humility, calling her "one of the Cook Islands' finest netballers."

Noovao's influence continued even after her netball career. Margie Foster, a former Silver Fern, remembered her as an inspiring figure, noting her calm and steady demeanor as a captain.
