Assam girl wins Karate gold, returns home to tent

Seventeen-year-old Janmoni Konwar was forced to leave her home in Assam due to floods, where she had to relocate to a tarpaulin-covered embankment. This disruption to her life came just before she was set to participate in the 20th All India Independence Cup Karate Championship in Delhi.

When PhysicsWallah founder and CEO Alakh Pandey came across Janmoni's family, he noticed her medals and her determination in karate. He immediately stepped in to help her participate in the championship by arranging her flight tickets and accommodation. Pandey's support allowed Janmoni to focus solely on her performance, resulting in a gold medal win after securing victories in all her matches.

Before Pandey's intervention, Janmoni had already won national medals in the years 2024 and 2025. He acknowledged her hard work and the support she received from her coach, federation, and the broader karate community. Pandey emphasized that his role was to help, and not to overshadow Janmoni's achievements. He expressed his desire to dedicate more time towards social causes such as education, sports, hunger, and livelihood.

Janmoni returned to her home in Jorhat with her gold medal, but her family was still living on the dyke, awaiting the restoration of their home. Her journey from a flooded home to a gold medal in Delhi showcased her resilience and the power of timely assistance.
