Aptoide Games Becomes First Third-Party App Store on Google Play

Google Play Store, a dominant platform for Android applications, has seen a significant shift as Aptoide Games, a third-party app store, becomes the first such platform available for direct download through Google Play in the US. This development is a direct result of a court order issued following Epic Games' antitrust lawsuit against Google.

The order, issued by US District Judge James Donato, mandates changes to Google's practices to facilitate the distribution of alternative Android app stores, thus ending the era of mandatory sideloading. Aptoide, a Portugal-based platform, offers over 400,000 applications and reaches about 25 million monthly active users. The company's CEO, Paulo Trezentos, emphasized the significance of this change, stating that it rectifies a situation where Android users have been unable to discover alternative app stores for over a decade through Google Play.

This shift comes after Epic Games' successful lawsuit in 2023, which forced Google to allow third-party app stores to be distributed through Google Play. Previously, users had to manually install these stores, a process often involving APK files and complex security settings. Now, Aptoide installs like a regular app, simplifying the process and removing a major barrier to entry that had previously limited the platform's growth in the US market.
