Apple Could Reinvent the Apple Watch With Screenless Devices and AI Health Features

Apple is reportedly exploring a range of changes to its popular Apple Watch, potentially redefining the device itself. According to Bloomberg's Mark Gurman, the industrial design team at Apple has been studying the concept of screenless wearables, as well as new display shapes and additional sizes and price tiers. The company has not committed to any particular direction but the exploration could signify a considerable overhaul of the current Apple Watch model.

In a market where competitors like Whoop bands and Oura rings have demonstrated a demand for smaller wearables focused on passive health tracking, Apple is taking these trends seriously. A screenless Apple device could provide competition in this segment while maintaining the traditional Apple Watch for users who desire a full smartwatch experience. The company is also looking at different display types and sizes, although a circular watch is unlikely to be released.

Beyond the Apple Watch, Apple is considering a broader range of wearable devices. At the high-end, there could be a pricier option above the existing Ultra and Hermès models. At the lower end, Apple might introduce more budget-friendly choices beyond the Apple Watch SE. This strategy could enable Apple to appeal to a wider range of consumers while providing more opportunities for sales across different price points.

Apple is also reportedly thinking about shifting its focus to AI-powered health features. Instead of merely recording health data, future Apple wearables could analyze this information and provide personalized guidance. This move could turn the Apple Watch from a passive data collector into a proactive health management tool, similar to other health-focused wearables that emphasize continuous monitoring and AI-driven coaching.

While Apple's potential changes are significant, they aren't expected to be realized in time for the September event. The upcoming Apple Watch Series 12 and Ultra 4 are likely to receive incremental updates, such as a new chip, health and fitness improvements, new colors and bands, and possibly ceramic cases. However, Apple's willingness to consider these changes indicates that the company believes the wearable market is evolving.
