Andrea DeCruz and Pierre Png reflect on her liver transplant, their marriage and overcoming fears

Actress-entrepreneur Andrea DeCruz and her husband Pierre Png reminisce about their 23-year marriage and DeCruz' liver transplant in a recent episode of CNA Insider's On The Red Dot. In 2002, DeCruz suffered from liver failure and needed a liver transplant, during which her husband Pierre donated part of his liver. Twenty-four years later, the couple reflects on how the experience has impacted DeCruz' life.

In the episode, DeCruz, 52, discusses how the transplant made her realize how precious her life is and why she cherishes it more. She shares her fear of heights and mentions how she has not attempted any extreme activities since the transplant. After the transplant, DeCruz attempted to descend Split Rock Summit and later agreed to take on the Giant Swing at Skypark Sentosa with her husband. DeCruz credits her husband for providing her with the courage to face these challenges.

Recalling her life-threatening situation, DeCruz explains how she initially thought her exhaustion was just from filming. However, her sister, who worked at the National Kidney Foundation, noticed her yellowed whites and encouraged her to visit a doctor. The doctor discovered that DeCruz' liver was inflamed, leading to her hospitalization on April 11 and the transplant by May 7. DeCruz shares her priest's comforting words before the procedure, expressing her readiness to leave if it meant fulfilling her life.

Png, also 52, recalls how the couple's relationship transcended their blood relation during the transplant process, as they had no shared biological ties. DeCruz highlights the strength she draws from her husband during difficult times, emphasizing how his calm demeanor helps her remain composed. The couple further discusses their enduring marriage, which began just 16 to 17 months after DeCruz' transplant, solidifying their commitment to each other.
