Amid pushback, government ready to refer FCRA Bill to a JPC

The Foreign Contribution (Regulation) Amendment Bill, 2026 is facing opposition from various parties, including the Congress, TMC, Left parties and DMK. Civil society and religious bodies, particularly the Church, have raised concerns over asset-vesting rules in the Bill. The government is considering sending the Bill to a Joint Parliamentary Committee (JPC) for further deliberation, which could help resolve the deadlock.

A CPM MP stated that the Bill's provisions are draconian and that the government should withdraw the Bill entirely. However, the Congress and DMK have agreed to a JPC referral instead. The BJP is attempting to gain support from the Christian community in Kerala and Tamil Nadu by addressing their concerns about the Bill.
