Amgen to open Science and Innovation centre in Hyderabad’s Genome Valley

Biotechnology giant Amgen plans to establish a Science and Innovation Centre in Hyderabad's Genome Valley, a move set to bolster the city's position as a global life sciences hub. The facility, slated for completion by 2027, aims to unite scientists and technologists from various domains, including discovery chemistry, drug metabolism, pharmacokinetics, and precision medicine.

Amgen's team will collaborate with the company's research sites worldwide, as stated after the signing of a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) with the Telangana government. Amgen currently operates seven research laboratories across the globe.

Jay Bradner, Amgen's Executive Vice-President for R&D, Artificial Intelligence, and Data, expressed confidence that the new center will enhance integration of experimental science, data, and technology across Amgen's global research capabilities, complementing its strong U.S.-based research and development footprint. The proposed centre is expected to generate employment opportunities for approximately 200 highly skilled professionals, further solidifying Hyderabad's emergence as a global hub for advanced life sciences research.

Telangana's Minister for IT and Industries, D.Sridhar Babu, hailed the expansion of global pharmaceutical and biotechnology leaders in the state, emphasizing its significance in reflecting growing confidence in the State's talent, infrastructure, and innovation ecosystem. He expressed pride in Telangana's continued attraction of global companies, specifically highlighting the proposed Amgen centre.

Amgen's formation of a global capability centre in Hyderabad in February 2025 marks the company's commitment to the region. Telangana has become an increasingly favored destination for global life sciences companies due to its robust research capabilities, skilled workforce, world-class infrastructure, and the thriving life sciences ecosystem at Genome Valley.

The State's Minister for IT and Industries, D.Sridhar Babu, urged Amgen to prioritize local youth and talent from Telangana in hiring for the proposed centre. Naveen Gullapalli, Amgen India's Managing Director, noted that Genome Valley's strong scientific expertise and infrastructure, combined with Amgen's existing technology and innovation site in Hyderabad, will facilitate the integration of wet-laboratory science with innovative technology, driving advancements in medicine development.
