Africa must rethink its culture of winner-takes-all democracy — Obasanjo

Former Nigerian President Olusegun Obasanjo has criticized the traditional Western-style democracy that many African nations have adopted, arguing it has resulted in a "winner-takes-all" political culture. Delivering remarks at the 2026 Goodluck Jonathan Foundation Democracy Dialogue in Bauchi, Obasanjo stated that the democracy model imported from the West lacks an African context or content.

He likened its adoption to wearing a dress not tailored to one's body, noting that it will not fit or serve its intended purpose. Obasanjo said the winner-takes-all political culture has created a scenario where election winners often disregard those who lose, and the term "loyal opposition," commonly found in African languages, is interpreted as "enemy."

He also lamented the poor management of diversity in many African societies, warning against a democracy that does not prioritize and nurture diversity. The former president decried the increasing influence of money and other forms of inducement in politics, stating that they had been growing "by leaps and bounds." Despite acknowledging that poverty and illiteracy do not aid democracy, Obasanjo criticized the lack of female representation in Nigerian politics, noting that there has been no female governor elected in the country for over 24 years.

He urged for a more inclusive approach to democracy, suggesting that countries should reassess the Western liberal democracy model and adopt one that reflects their history, culture, and values. The 2026 Goodluck Jonathan Foundation Democracy Dialogue, chaired by Obasanjo, brought together former President Goodluck Ebele Jonathan, former Vice President Namadi Sambo, and constitutional experts and civil society voices from across the continent.
