Fourteen illegal chrome miners lost their lives when a rockfall occurred near the Nkaneng settlement outside Marikana on Monday night. Most of the deceased were from Lesotho, and eight miners were hospitalized while an unknown number may still be underground. Community sources reported that seventeen miners were injured in the incident.

The provincial commissioner visited the site, which remained active. Illegal chrome workings and unlicensed washing plants are prevalent in the Rustenburg region, hidden among the plain sight of the landscape. Fourteen years have passed since police killed 34 striking miners at Marikana, and those events transpired only a few kilometers away.
