Afghanistan seal 2027 World Cup berth, West Indies to go through qualifiers again

Afghanistan secured automatic qualification for the 2027 World Cup after defeating Ireland in a match on Monday, setting the stage for West Indies to engage in the qualifiers for the third consecutive tournament of the 50-over format. The top eight teams, excluding host countries South Africa and Zimbabwe, based on the one-day rankings as of September 30, will secure direct entry into the event.

Afghanistan's win in Belfast saw them join a prestigious group of nations including Australia, India, New Zealand, Pakistan, Sri Lanka, England, and Bangladesh. The West Indies, currently ranked 10th, cannot generate sufficient points to qualify directly, despite playing two ODIs against India before the cut-off date. They had previously missed out on an automatic spot at the 2023 World Cup and were absent from the 2019 men's 50-over World Cup.

Under the revised format for 2027, the qualifier winner will advance straight to the second stage, whereas teams in the second, third, and fourth positions will participate in the Super Series, serving as the initial round. The 2027 World Cup is scheduled to take place in South Africa, Zimbabwe, and Namibia, with the exact match schedule yet to be announced.
