4-month-old baby allegedly abused, killed by step-grandmother

Police in Johor, Malaysia, are investigating allegations that a four-month-old baby girl was abused and killed by her step-grandmother. The 39-year-old woman turned herself in on July 31, reporting the baby's death, which was discovered while she was sleeping at their home in Taman Sri Saujana. Emergency responders attempted CPR but could not revive the infant, who was pronounced dead on the scene at 10:30 AM.

Initially, the incident was classified under Section 31(1)(a) of the Child Act 2001, which deals with neglect resulting in death. However, a post-mortem examination conducted by Pasir Gudang Hospital revealed that the baby's death resulted from trauma to the abdomen and chest caused by a blunt object. This finding led to the reclassification of the case under Section 302 of the Penal Code, which pertains to murder.

The investigation has resulted in the arrest of the suspect, the baby's step-grandmother, along with the baby's grandfather and mother. All three suspects have been remanded until further notice, with their involvement in the investigation being facilitated by the police. The completed investigation papers were forwarded to the Johor prosecution office yesterday.

According to Johor police chief Ab Rahaman Arsad, the suspect will face charges under Section 302 of the Penal Code for murder at the Kota Tinggi magistrates' court the following day.
