Wrexham closing in on Sunderland's Patterson

Wrexham is reportedly on the verge of signing Sunderland goalkeeper Anthony Patterson, 26. The Red Dragons manager, Phil Parkinson, has been keen to bolster his goalkeeping options and is now set to secure the England Under-21 international from his former club. Patterson is scheduled to undergo a medical with Wrexham and may feature in their Championship debut against Cardiff City on August 17.

The transfer could potentially create space for Nigeria's Arthur Okonkwo, who is nearing the end of his contract at Wrexham, to depart. Danny Ward, another Wales international, is also set to leave the Racecourse Ground when his contract expires. Patterson, a product of Sunderland's academy, made his senior debut in 2020-21 and played a key role in the Black Cats' promotion to the Championship via the League One play-offs in 2024-25.

He spent the latter half of the 2024-25 season on loan at Millwall, appearing in 16 matches. Patterson's arrival would bolster Wrexham's squad, which currently includes full-back Danny Imray and midfielder Ben Whiteman. Parkinson, however, admitted that the club still needs to strengthen further ahead of the competitive Championship season.
