“What happens here affects next 50 years”: why American left Pennsylvania to fight in Ukraine’s 47th Brigade

An American volunteer from Pennsylvania, named Lighthouse, has chosen to fight alongside Ukraine's 47th Separate Mechanized Brigade, convinced that the outcome of this conflict will have a profound impact on the world for the next half-century. He arrived in Ukraine from his home state of Pennsylvania, joining a growing number of international volunteers from over 50 countries who have joined Ukraine's International Legion since 2022, including the US, Britain, and Canada.

Lighthouse's motivation to join the fight stems from his research into the origins of the war, which led him back to the 2013-2014 Revolution of Dignity in Ukraine, when pro-Russian President Viktor Yanukovych was ousted, and Russia subsequently annexed Crimea and began fighting in eastern Ukraine. Lighthouse's decision to leave his life in Pennsylvania was not impulsive.

He meticulously prepared, both physically and financially, while also ensuring that his marriage would remain secure during his absence. His decision to join the 47th Mechanized Brigade was influenced by the brigade's foreign contingent, particularly a Colombian reconnaissance-and-strike group. However, what ultimately convinced Lighthouse was the camaraderie he found within the unit.

Before his departure, he had the opportunity to speak with his squad members, who kept in touch with him throughout his journey. Lighthouse describes Ukraine as feeling like home, with its welcoming people and pride in their fighting sons and daughters. For Lighthouse, the stakes of the conflict extend beyond Ukraine's borders, as he believes that what happens there will shape the world and potentially the future for the next 50 years.

He emphasizes the importance of Ukraine remaining a democracy and standing up to Russian aggression, echoing the sentiments of other American volunteers who have chosen to fight in the 47th Mechanized Brigade.
