Vox votará a favor de la propuesta de Sumar de excluir a Marruecos de la organización del Mundial 2030 junto a España y Portugal

Vox is set to vote in favor of a Notwithstanding Law (PNL) proposal by Sumar, which would exclude Morocco from the organization of the 2030 World Cup alongside Spain and Portugal. This information was confirmed to EL PAÍS by sources within the ultra-right-wing political formation. The PNL is a parliamentary initiative in which a political group urges the government to take a specific action, adopt a policy, or express a stance on an issue.

In this case, it concerns the exclusion of Morocco from the World Cup organization. The upcoming major football event, which still lacks a final venue, has been surrounded by controversy since its inception. However, the recent influx of immigrants in Ceuta has led to agreement among parties with opposing ideologies to exclude Morocco from the World Cup organization.

The PNL from the far-right party Vox states that Morocco is "not a loyal partner, either for organizing a sporting event of this magnitude or for any matter of neighborhood." They raise serious doubts about Morocco's ability to provide the necessary guarantees for such an event. However, it appears that Sumar will vote against Vox's proposal.

The remaining 32 deputies from the Vox-led group Sumar are expected to support the proposal, according to sources. The vote is expected to take place in September, when a new political session begins. Vox and Sumar are not the only ones advocating for the exclusion of Morocco from the World Cup organization. Pablo Fernández, the secretary general of Podemos, also expressed his stance on X, formerly Twitter, stating that "Spain should not host the World Cup with a dictatorship like Morocco, which does not respect human rights and is responsible for the death of over 140 people in an operation against Spain."

If Vox supports Sumar's PNL, which also includes Podemos, they would have a combined 62 deputies (26 from Sumar, 32 from Vox, and four from Podemos). The other parties have not yet openly voiced their opinions on the matter. Sports Minister Milagros Tolón was asked about the proposal from the government's coalition partner just a week ago on the radio station SER.

Tolón affirmed that they still trust the organization of the event. "We respect, we are in a coalition government, sometimes we have differences, and as a coalition, we bet on this World Cup," she defended. The matter was also addressed in an interview with The Times, a British newspaper, which alleged that FIFA President Gianni Infantino had offered the final of the tournament to Morocco in exchange for his support in the presidential elections.

Tolón replied, "We want the final to be in Spain because we deserve it." However, the final decision will be made by FIFA.
