Volta Regional Minister donates GH₵10,000, rice to support Wheelchair Basketball Championship

In an effort to bolster support for the upcoming Inter-Regional Wheelchair Basketball Championship, the Volta Regional Minister, James Gunu, has donated GH₵10,000 in cash and 5 bags of rice. The donation was made by the Volta Para Sports and Mobility Empowerment Association (VPMEA), under the leadership of President Madam Betty Gharbin, who visited the Minister prior to the five-day tournament that is scheduled for 13th to 17th August 2026.

The event, which will engage athletes from five regions, is expected to have around 150 participants. Its primary aim is to boost interest in para sports within the Volta Region. The VPMEA has highlighted several critical areas of need including wheelchairs, security, transportation, and logistics for the successful execution of the games.

Regional Minister Gunu praised the efforts of the VPMEA in promoting para sports in the region. He urged organizers to host the event with high standards and challenged the athletes and technical officials to train and prepare adequately for the competition. In addition to the cash and rice donation, Gunu promised to collaborate with the Ghana Police Service to ensure security during the event and Metro Mass Transit to provide transportation for the teams between venues over the five days.

The VPMEA leadership expressed their gratitude for the support, saying it would contribute towards the success and inclusivity of the tournament. The Inter-Regional Wheelchair Basketball Tournament in Ho will be the 6th edition of the competition.
