Trump signs executive order to space out childhood vaccines — What the new plan means

On Monday, US President Donald Trump signed an executive order aimed at altering federal childhood vaccine recommendations. The order seeks to separate certain vaccines, such as the measles, mumps, and rubella (MMR) vaccine, into individual shots given during separate medical visits. Trump's administration aims to promote this approach, despite current lack of separate measles, mumps, and rubella vaccines for children in the US.

The administration also wants the Department of Health and Human Services (HHS) to expand vaccine research and examine how vaccines are structured in other countries. However, public health experts warn that separating vaccines could leave children vulnerable to preventable diseases due to longer gaps between doses. This is especially concerning for highly contagious diseases like measles, where a longer period of unprotected exposure could lead to infection.

Under the order, HHS is directed to pursue revised childhood vaccine recommendations and expand vaccine research. However, the federal government does not have the power to directly impose vaccination requirements for school entry; states determine these requirements. The White House fact sheet indicates that the executive order could encourage states with school vaccine mandates to consider changing their laws to align with the administration's revised recommendations.

The new policy is linked to Health Secretary Robert F. Kennedy Jr., who has previously questioned aspects of US vaccine policy. Kennedy believes an unidentified environmental factor contributes to the rise in autism diagnoses and stated that his department would release research findings when ready. Despite the order, the scientific consensus remains clear: extensive research has found no link between childhood vaccines and autism.
