The revolt against FIFA chief Infantino continues with an open letter from soccer’s regional governing bodies

The revolt against FIFA chief Gianni Infantino has escalated with an open letter from three regional soccer governing bodies—UEFA, CONCACAF, and the AFC. The letter, co-signed by UEFA president Aleksander Čeferin, AFC president Salman Bin Ibrahim Al-Khalifa, and CONCACAF president Victor Montagliani, among three general secretaries, asserts that Infantino's plan to sell an interest in the World Cup was a "fundamental breach of trust."

The letter emphasized that "football is the world’s greatest shared passion. It belongs to no individual and no institution. It belongs to the players, the fans, the clubs, the member associations and every institution entrusted with safeguarding its future." Infantino's leadership has come under intense scrutiny after the failed plan which the letter described as "not the conduct of a custodian of the game, but of one who believes the game is answerable to him."

UEFA had threatened to boycott the World Cup and other FIFA competitions, and Norway's soccer federation called for Infantino to step down. The English Football Association also withdrew its support for Infantino's re-election next March. FIFA responded to the letter by defending Infantino against a "concerted and ongoing effort" to undermine his leadership, claiming the meeting where supporters alleged a breach in judgment was a "failure of communication."

The open letter, however, insists that Infantino's plan to sell shares in the World Cup was a "profound failure of judgment — not just a procedural misstep, but a fundamental breach of trust."
