Tanzania woos Dangote for fertiliser, energy investments

The Tanzanian government is seeking fresh investments from the Dangote Group, particularly in fertiliser production, energy, and industrial infrastructure, as it aims to boost economic development across the nation. Minister of State in the President’s Office responsible for Planning and Investment, Prof Kitila Mkumbo, revealed this during a recent visit to the Dangote Petroleum Refinery and Petrochemicals in Lagos.

Mkumbo stated that the delegation's purpose was to further discussions on expanding Dangote's investments in Tanzania, following a previous meeting between Tanzanian President Samia Suluhu Hassan and Dangote's CEO, Aliko Dangote.

Dangote already operates the largest cement manufacturing plant in Tanzania, valued at approximately $800m. The Tanzanian government is keen on leveraging Dangote's expertise in fertiliser production and refinery operations to support industrial development and economic growth. Mkumbo emphasized the need for stronger economic integration among African countries, moving beyond political cooperation towards greater industrialisation.

He highlighted the importance of developing local refining capacity to bolster Africa's energy security, particularly in light of recent tensions in the Strait of Hormuz, which have impacted global fuel prices.

Tanzania's Minister stressed that access to affordable and reliable energy is crucial for economic development and improving living standards. The government's interest in Dangote's expertise lies in its potential to contribute to industrialization and regional manufacturing capacity across the continent, as part of the African Continental Free Trade Area.
