Sundowns star Maseko wants out as Cardoso reveals conversation

Mamelodi Sundowns coach Miguel Cardoso has refuted rumors of a disagreement with winger Thapelo Maseko, asserting that the 22-year-old's potential departure is solely driven by his wish to explore opportunities elsewhere, rather than any personal conflicts. Last season, Maseko had a stint on loan at Cypriot side AEL Limassol, where he rediscovered his best form and caught the attention of the South African national team.

During the 2026 FIFA World Cup, Maseko shone brightly, scoring the decisive goal against South Korea and helping Bafana Bafana reach the quarter-finals for the first time in their history. Despite his impressive performances, Maseko is currently not part of Sundowns' plans for the upcoming Betway Premiership season, as European clubs have shown significant interest in his talents.

Coach Cardoso emphasized that there is no tension between himself and Maseko. "Thapelo Maseko and coach Miguel Cardoso have no issues," Cardoso stated. "During our recent conversation, I expressed my openness to him and the team if he wished to remain with us. If a player wants to depart, that becomes a matter for the club to decide."

While European clubs have shown interest in signing Maseko, no formal agreement has been reached. Cardoso noted that he is not directly involved in the negotiations but spoke highly of the former SuperSport United player. "I can only say that Thapelo is a wonderful boy," Cardoso remarked. "We hold him in very high regard. He had an impressive spell in Cyprus, excelled at the World Cup, and scored a crucial goal.

We communicate regularly during the competition. I believe I also conveyed to him the importance of maximizing his potential. Now, it is up to the club to determine the best course of action for the player." Although there are inquiries from clubs in South Africa, both Sundowns and Maseko seem to prefer a move abroad as the young winger aims to capitalize on the momentum from his successful loan spell in Cyprus and outstanding World Cup campaign.
