Splashing of millions at funds drives is suspect

As the election year approaches, a concerning trend has emerged among government-leaning politicians in Kenya - extravagant displays of wealth at fundraising events. Just one year before the General Election, these politicians are flashing mountains of cash at funds drives, raising eyebrows and sparking public outrage.

Under President William Ruto's UDA and the Oburu Oginga-led ODM, politicians like Junet Mohamed and the National Treasury Cabinet Secretary John Mbadi have been making headlines with their lavish contributions. Mohamed donated Sh10 million to a women's group, while Mbadi contributed Sh1.5 million and the President himself put up Sh10 million.

These sudden displays of opulence, just before the election, have sparked accusations of corruption and misuse of public funds. The real intention behind these lavish fundraisers, analysts say, is to buy votes and secure a stronghold in the Nyanza region.

The huge donations, often disguised as empowerment programmes, are raising red flags. They are suspected to be a deliberate attempt to entrench a culture of hand-outs and distort democratic competition. The weak conflict-of-interest regulations and loopholes allow politicians close to power to loot public coffers, leading to blatant extravagance that clashes with the daily financial struggles of ordinary citizens.

As the opposition and the government alike call for accountability and forensic audits, one thing is clear - these suspect heavy spending habits should be strictly monitored to curb abuse and ensure a fair electoral process.
