South Sudan whistleblower Athorbey released after nearly two months in detention

Nairobi, Kenya - Gaddhaffy Athorbey, a South Sudanese whistleblower, has been released from detention in Juba and returned to Nairobi after nearly two months, according to his family. Athorbey, also known as Gadafi Athorbey Guet, was reportedly abducted in Kenya on June 10 and transferred to South Sudan, where he was detained. His release on August 8 comes after rights groups, including Amnesty International Kenya, raised concerns over his abduction and alleged transfer.

Athorbey's family expressed relief at his return, stating that he had been subjected to investigations but that no wrongdoing was established. They also noted that his health had deteriorated during detention and that they are now grateful for his ability to receive medical treatment in Nairobi. The family questioned why he had been detained for such an extended period without being informed of the reason for his arrest.
