Mogadishu — Abdulkadir Mohamed Nur was elected as the speaker of Somalia's House of the People on Monday, securing 142 votes during a parliamentary election held in the capital city. Nur emerged victorious after becoming the frontrunner in the contest for the leadership of the Lower House. The election took place at a time when Somalia is experiencing a period of political transition, with the parliament operating beyond its term's expiry in a caretaker capacity.

By being elected, Nur assumes the role of the Lower House's leader as the country continues to engage in political negotiations and preparations for the next electoral process.
