Shelton beats Fonseca to reach another Montreal quarter-final

Ben Shelton, the defending champion, secured his spot in the quarter-finals of the ATP Montreal Masters on Sunday, defeating Joao Fonseca 6-3, 7-6 (7/3). The 23-year-old American maintained a flawless record in reaching the last eight, leaving no sets unclaimed. Shelton, who is ranked world number 10, will face the winner of a later match between Botic Van De Zandschulp and Jakub Mensik.

Fonseca, a promising Brazilian talent, suffered after landing awkwardly on his ankle while leading 3-1, 40-30, making 32 unforced errors in the match. Shelton, who struggled with the windy conditions, credited his gritty performance for his victory. Meanwhile, Daniel Merida defeated Tallon Griekspoor 6-3, 6-1, marking his fourth-round victory on hardcourt.

The Spaniard, who had never won a tour-level match on hard court before, joins compatriot Rafael Jodar in the quarter-finals. Merida, who will face Learner Tien in the next round, expressed his happiness with his performance and the confidence of younger players.
