Severe weather disrupts travel across South Africa: Snowfall and road closures reported

Severe weather is wreaking havoc across South Africa, with snowfall and heavy rainfall causing road closures and travel disruptions in multiple provinces. KwaZulu-Natal and the Eastern Cape have borne the brunt of the storm, with numerous major highways shut down due to the wintry conditions. The N3, a critical route, is closed between Estcourt and Harrismith in KwaZulu-Natal, and motorists are advised against using the highway to access the province.

Additional closures include sections of the N3 at Midmar/Howick and the stretch between Harrismith and Van Reenen Pass. Emergency crews are spreading brine to prevent black ice formation along these routes. Sleet and rain are falling between Warden and Mooi River, while snow has blanketed Swinburne. Drivers are urged to slow down immediately.

The R74 at Oliviershoek Pass, situated between Harrismith and Bergville, is considered a high-risk area, as conditions are rapidly worsening towards the KwaZulu-Natal border. Thick ice has impacted routes near the Matatiele border and regional roads in the southern Free State, with some mountain passes facing temporary closures.

Traffic is running smoothly in most parts of Mpumalanga, but Long Tom Pass on the R37 has been temporarily closed due to stranded vehicles on icy inclines. The Western Cape is experiencing moderate traffic, but the Swartberg Pass and Mont Rochelle/Franschhoek roads are closed due to snow. Gauteng, Limpopo, North West, and the Northern Cape are also experiencing relatively normal conditions, though some areas are dealing with cold and wet weather.

While steps are being taken to keep the public informed, road and weather conditions are prone to rapid changes, and motorists are advised to verify current conditions with relevant authorities before embarking on their journeys.
