Ruto declares UDA-ODM must win 2027, warns opposition victory would be dangerous

President William Ruto has stated that the UDA-ODM alliance must secure victory in the 2027 General Election, warning that an opposition win would be perilous for Kenya. Addressing a coalition leaders' convention in Naivasha on August 10, 2026, Ruto emphasized that the alliance's triumph in the forthcoming polls is essential, stating, "The next election… we must win.

By God's grace, we must win the next election." He cautioned against granting power to an opposition group lacking a clear plan, agenda, policy, and vision, calling it a "dangerous alternative for Kenya." Ruto's claims resonate with his past rhetoric, notably during his 2021 presidential campaign in Ukambani, where he urged voters to reject political entities without a clear development agenda.

He questioned leaders without a development record, stating they had no right to seek votes. The Independent Electoral and Boundaries Commission (IEBC) has warned of potential challenges in conducting credible elections amid heightened political activity, citing concerns over hate speech, ethnic incitement, violence, and anarchy.

A multi-agency team, including IEBC, NCIC, DCI, and ORPP, has been formed to combat hate speech and electoral violence, threatening politicians found guilty of incitement with disqualification from future contests.
