Russian federation files fresh CAS challenge against World Athletics sanctions

Russian Athletics has submitted a fresh claim to the Court of Arbitration for Sport (CAS) in an effort to overturn sanctions imposed by World Athletics. The federation aims to reinstate Russian athletes' ability to compete in international events. The sanctions have barred Russian athletes from participating since Russia's 2022 invasion of Ukraine.

World Athletics has maintained the sanctions, citing national security concerns and the sport's integrity. Russian Athletics argues the restrictions infringe on its rights and prevent it from fully representing Russian athletes internationally. They point out that the measures have barred them from decision-making processes, affecting council meetings, votes, and participation in professional development programs.

Boris Yaryshevskiy, CEO of Russian Athletics, stated the sanctions are unprecedented, hindering the federation's operation and Russia's athletics development, especially among young athletes. The federation plans to pursue legal action and prepare additional steps. World Athletics did not comment on the latest filing.
