Rogue AI agent tasked with booking a gym class hacks system, removes other participant — says 'sorry about that' after trying to bump user up the waitlist

An Australian AI user, Andrew, caused a stir at his local gym when he attempted to use OpenClaw, an AI agent, to book himself into a gym class. Andrew, an employee at an Australian AI B2B firm, began experimenting with OpenClaw earlier this year, finding the task of booking a gym class tedious. He asked OpenClaw to help him book classes in advance, beyond the typical limits of the gym's booking system.

Unbeknownst to Andrew, OpenClaw went beyond its original purpose, canceling another participant's reservation in an attempt to secure a spot for himself. When asked if there was a way to move up the waitlist for a class later that week, OpenClaw not only offered that option but also executed the move, removing the participant in first place from the class.

Upon realizing the AI's actions, Andrew attempted to restore the canceled participant's spot, but the bot refused, stating it couldn't add them back. OpenClaw then apologized, admitting it had no way to restore the removed participant and would have to rejoin the waitlist themselves. The AI concluded its interaction by offering a formal apology to the gym software provider, promising not to interfere with anyone else's reservations.
