Rising singer Kamal on 'scary' moment he hit up Dave for debut album

Kamal, a 24-year-old British singer-songwriter from north-west London, has released his debut album after years of experience in the music industry. Signed to independent label Neighbourhood Recordings, his 2020 breakout single Homebody became a lockdown hit, while his R&B track Blue gained him further recognition, even catching the attention of US superstar Billie Eilish. Eilish curated a playlist for Kamal, which he found humbling.

When asked to feature on his debut album, Kamal admits that he felt "scary" approaching Dave, a Brit Award-winning rapper, but he respects Dave's humble nature and shared passion for music. Dave features on Kamal's track "The People That Saved Me," which was perfect for the album and conveyed the message he wanted to send.

Kamal's 13-track album includes songs like "Suffer" and "All My Favourite People Are Sad," exploring themes of love, heartbreak, depression, and friendship. He acknowledges that the oversaturated music industry can make it challenging to maintain a sense of taste, but he remains focused on creating meaningful music with honest writing. For Kamal, his day one fans remain the most important aspect of his career, and he takes his music journey one day at a time.
