Public urged to exercise utmost caution as more snowfall expected

Members of the South African public are being strongly advised to exercise extreme caution as more snowfall is expected across several regions, along with heavy rain, freezing conditions, and strong winds. The South African Weather Service has issued weather warnings, warning of hazardous travel conditions, particularly in mountainous areas and along affected road networks.

Government spokesperson William Baloyi reminds citizens that weather and road conditions can change rapidly, and to rely on official updates from authoritative sources for the latest information. The South African Red Cross Society is assessing damage caused by strong winds in the Free State, where some houses have suffered roof damage.

In the Fezile Dabi region, volunteers from the Disaster Management Centre and municipalities are working to complete the assessment amid persistent wind and rainfall. Motorists are being urged to avoid non-essential travel due to hazardous road conditions, including snow, rain, and icy roads across various provinces. The South African National Roads Agency has reported that heavy snowfall is affecting parts of major highways, while other areas are experiencing icy conditions or rain, posing potential flooding risks.
