Psticide residues found in 58 food samples tested in Kerala, says Minister Siddique

Agriculture Minister T Siddique revealed on Monday that excessive pesticide residues and toxic substances were detected in 58 out of 1,262 food samples tested in official Kerala labs. He expressed concern that purchasing vegetables from shops could mean buying toxic substances for one's family. The minister emphasized the seriousness of the issue and announced plans to promote organic vegetable farming.

He detailed the Kathir project, which aims to cultivate farming cultures in educational institutions, and mentioned plans to implement the project in 500 schools this year. The Agriculture Department will provide funding for the initiative. Siddique also proposed granting weightage marks to students involved in agricultural activities through Kathir clubs.

Additionally, the government plans to establish 2,000 vegetable markets during Onam, in collaboration with various stakeholders. The Agriculture Department has allocated ₹10.5 crore for price control efforts, with funds already disbursed. Siddique stressed that officials must adhere to government policies and warned of consequences for those acting against them.
