PS Omollo Issues Update on Kihunguro Footbridge Construction Along Thika Superhighway

Principal Secretary for Interior and National Administration Raymond Omollo has provided an update on the Kihunguro Footbridge Project along the Thika Superhighway. This new infrastructure is described as a vital investment in pedestrian safety and traffic management. The Kenya National Highways Authority (KeNHA) is responsible for implementing the project, which aims to address safety concerns at Kihunguro in Ruiru, a section of the Thika Superhighway notorious for pedestrian and vehicular hazards.

The current street-level zebra crossing has contributed to conflicts between pedestrians and vehicles, causing traffic disruptions along the busy corridor. The modern overhead footbridge is intended to replace this dangerous crossing, providing pedestrians with a safer means of crossing while allowing motorists to maintain a smoother and uninterrupted flow of traffic.

The bridge will incorporate accessibility features, including a conventional staircase on one side and a gentle ramp on the other, catering to the needs of persons with disabilities, wheelchair users, and those transporting goods. By offering a designated crossing point away from moving traffic, the project is expected to significantly reduce pedestrian-related accidents.

The Interior ministry emphasizes the importance of improved pedestrian infrastructure for enhancing public safety, especially in areas experiencing rapid population growth and increased traffic. The Kihunguro Footbridge is anticipated to reinforce the government's broader initiatives to improve road safety and mobility along the Thika Superhighway, serving millions of commuters traveling between Nairobi, Ruiru, Thika, and surrounding areas.

Omollo also highlighted the project's alignment with the State Department for Internal Security and National Administration's commitment to safeguarding lives through safer public infrastructure, recognizing that enhanced road safety and efficient transport networks are essential for public security, orderly mobility, and sustainable socio-economic development.
