PRETAG gives government two-week ultimatum to implement 20% deprived-area allowance

The Pre-Tertiary Teachers Association of Ghana (PRETAG) has pressured the government to implement a 20% allowance for teachers working in disadvantaged areas within the next two weeks or face industrial action. The Association had previously threatened to go on strike at the end of July 2026 over unpaid allowance, but suspended the action following interventions by the Ghana Education Service and the Fair Wages and Salaries Commission. However, PRETAG claims it can no longer wait indefinitely for the government to act.

During a media briefing on Monday, August 10, 2026, during the Association’s National Executive Council meeting in Koforidua, National President King Ali Awudu announced that the government has until the end of August to resolve the issue. The 20% deprived-area allowance is meant to encourage teachers in underserved communities and improve teacher retention and staffing in such schools.

PRETAG also demands the implementation of a promotion structure for qualified teachers, moving them from Deputy Director to Director II and then to Director I. Mr. Awudu urged President John Dramani Mahama to ensure the promotion structure is implemented, as it was a commitment made during the 2024 election campaign. He warned that failure to address the outstanding issues by the latest deadline could lead to a series of industrial actions by the Association.
