Praggnanandhaa set to face Samuel Sevian in Sinquefield Cup 1st round

The upcoming Sinquefield Cup tournament will commence on August 10 and conclude on August 21, featuring a total of nine rounds played on a round-robin basis among ten players. The event's prize pool amounts to USD 475,000. Indian Grandmaster R. Praggnanandhaa is set to compete against American Grandmaster Samuel Sevian in the first round, which will see Praggnanandhaa, who has recently claimed victory in the St. Louis Rapid and Blitz, aiming to defend his position as the second-ranked player on the Grand Chess Tour.

If Praggnanandhaa maintains his recent form, he is expected to progress to the final stage of the tournament later this year. Currently, American Grandmaster Fabiano Caruana leads the GCT rankings, followed by Praggnanandhaa. Unexpectedly, French Grandmaster Alireza Firouzja has withdrawn from the event, allowing Sevian to make his debut in the Sinquefield Cup.

The remaining regular tour players will participate, further bolstering the tournament's strength alongside the Norway Chess Classic, which Praggnanandhaa also won. Apart from Caruana, American players Wesley So and Levon Aronian are among the competitors vying for top spots. Notable among the international participants are Uzbekistan's World Championship contender Javokhir Sindarov, Germany's Vincent Keymer, the Netherlands' Anish Giri, and France's Maxime Vachier-Lagrave.

The tournament also includes Jorden van Foreest of the Netherlands, whose exceptional skills could pose a significant challenge to any opponent.
