Power workers oppose planned private-sector participation in ECG and NEDCo

The Public Utilities Workers Union (PUWU) has expressed strong opposition to the government's plan to involve private-sector entities in the management of ECG and NEDCo. The decision to appoint a transaction adviser to facilitate this participation has been viewed by the union as a violation of the trust and confidence that has existed in their dealings with the Ministry of Energy and Green Transition.

A statement from PUWU's General Secretary, Timothy Nyam, dated August 3, 2026, highlighted the union's previous submission of an alternative proposal for private-sector participation in ECG. They also mentioned a position paper they had submitted detailing their concerns, which the ministry had yet to acknowledge.

PUWU criticized the government's move, citing historical issues with privatization efforts in Ghana and across Africa. They argue that such privatizations often lead to higher costs for consumers, reduced access to essential services, and decreased national sovereignty. The union proposed solutions focused on improving the operational efficiency and financial viability of ECG and NEDCo, including the need for competent boards and management with clear performance targets, depoliticized structures, and greater accountability.

The union staunchly opposes any form of privatization, advocating instead for comprehensive reforms to strengthen these state-owned utilities and ensure affordable, equitable access to electricity.
