Police seek charges against Bangkok bar owner for deadly fire

Thai authorities plan to prosecute the proprietor of a renowned Bangkok bar, Rong Beer Na Lad Phrao, for multiple offenses following a deadly fire that claimed 37 lives on July 12. Suvicha Salaibatr, the bar owner, was among several injured individuals admitted to hospitals after the blaze engulfed his establishment. Chief investigator Isara Na Phatthalung disclosed that an arrest warrant has been issued for Suvicha on six charges, encompassing negligence resulting in death, serious injury, harm, fire, criminal mischief, and operating an entertainment venue without a valid license.

Suvicha remains in the intensive care unit, awaiting the reading of the charges by the authorities. If found guilty, Suvicha could face a maximum of ten years in prison for the negligence charge alone. The fire, attributed to an electrical short circuit in the ceiling, resulted in numerous fatalities, primarily due to smoke inhalation.

Thailand's adherence to health and safety regulations, particularly in bars and nightclubs, has been a subject of ongoing concern. A similar incident occurred in 2009 at Bangkok's Santika club during New Year celebrations, where a fire claimed 67 lives and injured over 200 people.
