Philippines floods and landslides leave at least 12 dead

Heavy monsoon rains have triggered landslides and flooding in the Philippines, resulting in at least 12 deaths and eight people missing, according to authorities. Over half a million individuals in 33 provinces have been impacted by the intensified southwest monsoon, coupled with two tropical cyclones, as reported by the National Disaster Risk Reduction and Management Council.

The agency also noted extensive damage to homes and infrastructure. In the mountainous city of Baguio on Luzon island, four lives were lost and six others remain missing after a landslide engulfed multiple residences, reported by the city's public information office. Approximately 150 rescuers are working in shifts to continue the search and retrieval efforts, while a dozen more landslide incidents have been documented in Baguio City amidst ongoing heavy rainfall.

President Ferdinand Marcos Jr. issued an order on Monday for government employees to work remotely and for educational institutions to adopt alternative learning methods in Metro Manila and over a dozen provinces, as extensive flooding inundated towns and major roads.
