People’s Renaissance Movement opens door to Sifuna, Linda Mwananchi

The People’s Renaissance Movement (PM) Party has extended an open invitation to Nairobi Senator Edwin Sifuna and the Linda Mwananchi movement, providing them an alternative platform to contest the 2027 General Election amidst a dispute over the registration of their chosen party name. Isaac Fwamba, the party's Secretary-General, announced at a Kitale event on August 10, 2026, that PM is prepared to offer Linda Mwananchi a space to field candidates for all elective positions, including the presidency, Parliament, and county assemblies.

Fwamba advised the Linda Mwananchi group to contemplate joining an existing party instead of persisting with the registration of another political entity. He stated, "We urge Linda Mwananchi to consider joining an existing party rather than continuing to pursue the registration of another political outfit. We, the People’s Renaissance Movement, are ready to give them space to contest in this party."

This offer came shortly after Linda Mwananchi leaders threatened daily protests outside the Registrar of Political Parties (ORPP) if their registration dispute wasn't resolved. Vihiga Senator Godfrey Osotsi had given the ORPP until August 10 to resolve the matter, warning that supporters would then hold daily meetings outside the ORPP offices.

Osotsi accused unnamed individuals of attempting to seize control of the Linda Mwananchi name and invoked Article 38 of the Constitution, which safeguards citizens' political rights, including the right to form or participate in a political party. The invitation now offers Sifuna and his associates another option if their efforts to secure the Linda Mwananchi name fail.

The registration dispute escalated after the ORPP approved the registration of the Liberty National Democratic Alliance, or the LINDA Party, creating a new dispute over the "Linda" political identity. Linda Mwananchi had already held consultations with ORPP Registrar John Cox Lorionokou, who reportedly agreed to reconsider the earlier rejection of the Linda Mwananchi name, briefly giving movement leaders hope that the registration process could proceed.

However, the registration of the rival LINDA Party introduced a new complication. The registration battle coincides with an aggressive grassroots mobilization campaign by Sifuna and his allies, who position themselves as presidential contenders and work to establish a political structure capable of carrying the movement into the 2027 election.

The registration of a party is crucial for the movement's plans as it would provide the formal electoral vehicle for candidates to contest the presidency, parliamentary seats, and county positions. This development adds another layer to the already crowded opposition realignment ahead of the 2027 General Election, with several established parties and emerging movements attempting to build coalitions, recruit political leaders, and establish grassroots structures.
