Palou and Wanser push back on backmarker traffic complaints following Portland victory

Alex Palou and race strategist Barry Wanser refuted calls from rival drivers to overhaul IndyCar's blue flag regulations after a triumphant finish at the Grand Prix of Portland. Rivals Felix Rosenqvist and Will Power expressed dissatisfaction with the series' handling of backmarkers, alleging they lost valuable time behind slower competitors.

Rosenqvist even called for IndyCar to "grow up" regarding the management of lapped traffic. Power, frustrated by a radio communication issue, lost nearly three seconds to backmarker Sting Ray Robb, demanding driver intervention if race control fails to act. Wanser dismissed the notion of rule changes, asserting that drivers behind slower cars are entitled to fight for track position.

"You have the right to be there and fight," Wanser explained. "A yellow can give you an opportunity to be back on the lead lap, then you'd be fighting for a greater position." Palou, echoing Wanser's stance, emphasized the importance of consistent officiating across all events rather than altering the rulebook to accommodate leading cars.
