OPINION: Letlhaku’s agents are setting him up for failure

Mamelodi Sundowns' young player Kutlwano Letlhaku, who is only 20 years old, may be setting himself up for failure due to the actions of his agents. While some may believe that an agent's role is to help navigate a player's career, in Letlhaku's case, it seems they are doing the opposite. His representatives frequently put him in the spotlight, often for negative reasons, which could be detrimental to his development.

One recent example is when Sundowns reportedly turned down an offer from an overseas club. This move was used to generate sympathy, but it puts Letlhaku in an uncomfortable position within the club, especially considering he is still under contract. This isn't the first time such tactics have been employed; Letlhaku had previously handed in a transfer request last year, which Sundowns refused to grant.

The situation suggests that Letlhaku's agent, Matthew Moore, might be exerting undue influence over the young player. It's hard to imagine a player of his age making such a drastic decision without significant encouragement from those around him. Moreover, Letlhaku hasn't been a consistent performer for Sundowns since his senior debut in 2024, despite showing flashes of talent.

Comparisons can be drawn to Relebohile Mofokeng, a player who carried Orlando Pirates on his shoulders before moving to Belgium. Mofokeng's consistent performances made it hard to ignore his readiness for the next step in his career. However, for Letlhaku, the situation seems different. It's not a matter of his ability, which remains to be seen, but rather the influence around him and whether this approach is truly in his best interest.

Agents can be beneficial in a player's career, but when a player is repeatedly caught in public battles between his representatives and his employers, it can become counterproductive. Letlhaku's future is currently tied to Sundowns, and his agent's actions may not be helping him reach his full potential.
