OFUGO’S PROTEST OVER INFRASTRUCTURE

The residents of Ofugo and nearby areas in Kogi State's Ankpa Local Government are grappling with a challenging predicament. The issue at hand is not solely the extraction of coal, but the adverse effects it has on their roads, land, environment, and overall community resources. It is imperative for every conscientious citizen to recognize that while mining provides income and profit, the community bearing the brunt of these activities must not be left without essential infrastructure and development.

Recently, a group of youths from Ofugo and surrounding communities engaged in a peaceful protest by obstructing a road utilized by coal mining operators. The aim of this demonstration was to bring attention to the government and mining companies regarding the poor condition of the road connecting Enabo through Ofugo and Ika. This action should not be perceived merely as an attempt to hinder mining operations, but rather as a desperate plea from a community yearning for recognition.

When roads become almost impassable due to heavy mining activities, the individuals using them daily bear the consequences. Farming, trading, studying, working, and other daily tasks rely on these roads. It is unacceptable for a road that connects communities to degrade while natural resources are continuously extracted from the same area.

The government holds a duty to address the legitimate concerns raised by communities where economic activities occur. Ofugo, Ankpa, and neighboring communities continue to confront significant challenges, including insufficient electricity, access to clean drinking water, functional educational facilities, and healthcare infrastructure.

These are fundamental necessities that cannot be denied to communities contributing natural resources to the broader economy. Consequently, the grievances of the youths should be given serious consideration instead of being disregarded.
