Nikon are predicting fewer camera sales (again!) Could Nikon be in real trouble?

Nikon, once known as one of the 'big two' in camera sales, has been absent from recent photo industry news. The company has reported disappointing business performance, with lower sales volumes and increased costs due to higher memory prices. Although overall revenue has grown year-on-year, this growth was driven by factors outside imaging products and favorable foreign exchange conditions.

However, the company also took a 4.1 billion yen ($25.2 million) inventory write-down in its Precision Equipment segment, leading to a flat overall operating profit.

Nikon's imaging products category, which accounts for 44% of its total revenue, has been hit hard. The company hasn't announced any new cameras this year, and its revenue woes are attributed to reduced sales of interchangeable lens digital cameras, particularly in China. Nikon has revised its sales forecast downward by 300,000 units for the rest of the year, citing demand contraction in China as a key factor.

The company's silence on new camera models in 2026 has raised concerns about its future. While reviving its Coolpix compact heritage might help in the short term, it's unclear if this alone will be enough to address the company's declining fortunes.
