Mumbai: BMC To Procure 1,000 Metric Tonnes Cold Mix For ₹2.25 Crore After Leasing Out Worli Asphalt Plant

Mumbai's Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC) has decided to acquire 1,000 metric tonnes of cold mix for approximately Rs 2.25 crore from a private contractor, following the leasing out of its Worli asphalt plant. The move comes after the civic body halted in-house cold-mix production in April 2026, forcing it to rely on external suppliers to tackle potholes during the monsoon season.

The BMC has entered into a six-month contract with Mittal Petro Pharma Chem to supply the cold-mix material to all 26 administrative wards promptly. The material will be delivered as needed during the monsoon to ensure continuous pothole repairs. Previously, the Worli batch-mix plant produced the cold mix, which was used across the city until the plant's lease was granted to a private entity in March 2026.

The decision to procure cold mix from outside sources aims to address the urgent need for pothole repairs incurred by Mumbai during the monsoon. The civic body attributes a significant reduction in pothole repair expenses, declining from Rs 89 crore last year to Rs 42 crore this year, to its ongoing road concretisation drive. As part of its 'Pothole-Free Mumbai' initiative, the BMC aims to complete Phase I by December 12, 2026, and Phase II by May 2027, ultimately tackling the recurring monsoon pothole problem.
