M'sian eatery accused of selling pork over Mee Pok menu items, files police report

A 95-year-old coffee shop in Segamat, Johor, has accused a Facebook page of falsely implying that it was serving pork. The shop, Nan Yang Coffee Shop, filed a police report and a complaint with the Malaysian Communications and Multimedia Commission (MCMC) after the page claimed its menu item, Mee Pok Sup, contained pork. The post, published by the Halal inquiry Company direktori, showed a screenshot of the menu and circled the term "Mee Pok Sup," which refers to flat noodles in Teochew.

The shop owner, Nan Yang Coffee Shop, denied the allegations, stating that they do not use pork or lard in any of their dishes and do not hold JAKIM halal certification. The shop also confirmed that the term "Mee Pok" is commonly used to refer to Malay or Muslim customers in the region. The Facebook page initially took down the post and later issued an apology, acknowledging errors and misunderstandings.

However, the page subsequently restricted public comments on the corrected post. The coffee shop's owner has questioned why public discussion was allowed for the original, inaccurate post but not for the correction.
