When traveling abroad in the European Union, calling and browsing the internet using your German mobile contract is often possible without extra charges, thanks to the "Roam like home" rules of the European Union. However, this "Roam like home" does not last indefinitely. If a user consumes their tariff primarily abroad for more than four months, providers may charge higher rates, according to the European Consumer Center.

These additional charges will not be imposed arbitrarily. The mobile network provider will first send a warning and request a change in usage behavior or proof that the user is mostly at home, as advised by consumer centers. Only if usage remains unchanged will the charges be applied. These charges are capped at a maximum of 1.10 Euros per gigabyte when browsing (as of 2027, only 1 Euro), 1.9 cents per call minute, and 0.3 cents per SMS.

However, depending on the duration of stay and the country visited, it may be more cost-effective to purchase a local prepaid card, advises the European Consumer Center. E-sim alternatives may also be an option, as some mobile network providers offer data packages for mobile internet usage in various countries. While the roaming regulation applies to EU member states as well as Liechtenstein, Norway, Iceland, and since early 2026, Ukraine and Moldova.

Monaco, San Marino, Andorra, the Isle of Man, Gibraltar, Vatican City, and other territories do not fall under the regulation. Some mobile network providers may still list these areas under the EU countries or provide favorable conditions. To clarify, users should check the provider's price list or directly inquire with the provider.

In the United Kingdom, 1&1, Vodafone, Telefónica (O2), and Deutsche Telekom still often do not charge additional roaming fees despite Brexit.
