Microsoft is planning to unveil its next-gen AI chip this fall as it races to reduce Nvidia reliance

Microsoft is set to introduce its latest AI chip, the Maia 300, in September, according to a report from The Information. The announcement comes after the company introduced its initial Maia AI chip in November 2023, but has been trailing behind rivals like Alphabet and Amazon in expanding its in-house chip capabilities. These rivals have seen increased revenue from their custom AI chips, with Google recognizing income from sales of Tensor Processing Units in the June quarter and Amazon benefiting from the adoption of its Trainium processors.

Microsoft has been negotiating with chipmaker TSMC for manufacturing capacity for over 300,000 of the Maia 300 chips, with delivery expected in 2027. The company is also aiming to significantly increase production and entice major cloud customers like Anthropic to utilize the chip. Microsoft's general manager for Azure Maia, Andrew Wall, emphasized that the company remains committed to its long-term AI infrastructure strategy despite not disclosing production volumes.

TSMC declined to comment when reached for information outside regular business hours. Microsoft's long-term goal includes securing capacity for more than 1 million Maia 300 chips, although component supplies and ongoing negotiations with TSMC could potentially impede these plans. The company recently unveiled the second-generation Maia 200 in January, which features TSMC's 3-nanometer technology and a substantial amount of SRAM, a type of memory that can offer speed advantages for AI systems managing large numbers of user requests.
